Eventually, her curiosity got the best of her, and she turned to see who’d I been speaking of, only to find that he and the rest of his party weren’t visible any longer.

“What kind of game are you playing?”

I checked my watch for the time.

“The long one,” I said, standing. “Shall we go introduce ourselves before our food arrives?”

I took her hand without asking this time, giving her no choice but to stand and follow me to the private dining room on the other side of the restaurant. The doors were drawn shut, and the guard standing on the outside stood a little taller the closer I got.

“Tell Senator Michaels I’d like to see him, and he has about two seconds to make that happen. I’d love to embarrass him in front of all these people.”

I waved my free hand around for emphasis.

“One.”

He moved to the side, already knowing who I was and what I was capable of. I lifted an eyebrow, and he slid the doors open, revealing three men. All three holding a position of power that people like me exploited but none of them were innocent.

“Gentleman,” I greeted, sliding the door shut and releasing Lucia so she could take in what was happening under her father’s nose.

“What is this?” Novice Buck spat out, his face turning an ugly shade of red.

His hatred for me was comical. It was too bad Pietro sent his stand-in and hadn’t brought himself to the party. Novice was nothing but a pawn in a bigger scheme.

“I heard congratulations are in order.” I pulled up a seat and reached out to slide the plate of scallops my way. “Who knew the head of the Pennsylvania labor union was tied to the mafia?”

Henry Malfoy, who had been stopping all permit requests submitted by the Moretti team for their new housing project, looked perturbed and a little afraid. I wasn’t buying the innocent act. He knew exactly who Leonardo Moretti was, just as he knew who Novice was tied to. Anyone who was smart would have played their cards right and chosen the better team to be on, but here he was sitting with a state representative who had a bad rap and the liaison to the sick fuck who brought Lucia to my doorstep in the first place.

I’d have to thank him for that one day.

When Lucia said her father had an issue that mine could take care of as a way into the Delegation, I did some digging, and it turned out Leonardo’s own father was working against him. And I use that term lightly. Pietro was more of a sperm donor in this instance. A deadbeat.

I popped a scallop into my mouth and chewed, enjoying the burst of flavor.

“Did you know that scallops come in a shell? Like clams? It’s quite interesting—”

“What do you want?” Senator Michaels asked, flexing his jaw in anger.

“Do you see that pretty woman over there?” I pointed to Lucia, whose gaze was curiously pinned on me.
